There has been a great deal of discussion on the Internet about whether to adopt the new mirrorless camera systems or not. Most serious photographers have used Digital SLR’s from Canon or Nikon.  These are digital versions of the film SLR . The shutter mechanism has a mirror between the lens and the sensor that records the light (image). The new mirrorless cameras do away with this and for a variety of reasons are smaller and lighter . This is very appealing to a travel photographer because we carry our equipment around the world, usually on our backs. But the question many people are asking is, is the technology ready for prime time?  I decided the only way to see if I could switch to this technology was if I took the plunge and tried it.  Also, there are times when I simply can’t take all my current equipment with me. So carrying a lighter, smaller load is extremely appealing.  Over the next few weeks, I will document, almost in the form of a journal, my experience and thoughts. I will outline why I chose the Sony NEX-6 over other cameras.  Hopefully this will help others going through the same decision making process.  The photo below was taken without a tripod and is a single photo as opposed to the HDR process I normally employ.  A full resolution of it is available on my Smugmug gallery (linked above).
