Plitvice Lakes
Croatia has opened up as a popular summer destination, particularly for Europeans. Most head to the beaches of Dubrovnik or Split. Lesser known is a national park in the interior of the country called Plitvice. This is a really worthwhile destination in Croatia. And it is a destination because getting there is not so easy. Croatia has an excellent highway down the west coast, but the rest of the roads are somewhat lacking. The road to Plitvice is single carriage with an average speed of about 60kph. But if you are on vacation, does it matter?
The formation of the lakes is really interesting, There are about 16 lakes on the surface, joined by cascading rivers and waterfalls. The water is crystal clear evidencing a beautiful azure color (see photo). It takes about 3 to 4 hours to wander through the park.
You can buy tickets at the gate and you can expect to pay anywhere from $8 to $30 per person depending on your age and the time of year you are visiting.
